Electrolyte Abnormalities

service electrolyte abnormalities
Electrolyte abnormalities occur when the levels of essential minerals in the body—such as sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium—become too high or too low, disrupting normal body functions. These imbalances can be caused by kidney disease, certain medications, dehydration, or other underlying health conditions. At East Texas Kidney Specialists, we diagnose and treat a wide range of electrolyte and acid-base disturbances, including:
Sodium imbalance:
  • Hyponatremia (low sodium), which can lead to confusion, fatigue, falls and seizures
  • Hypernatremia (high sodium), which may cause thirst, weakness, or neurological symptoms

Potassium imbalance:
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium), which can result in muscle weakness, cramps, or heart rhythm problems
  • Hyperkalemia (high potassium), which can be life-threatening due to its impact on heart function

Magnesium imbalance
:
  • Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium), which may cause muscle cramps, twitching, irregular heartbeat, or fatigue

Calcium imbalance
:
  • Hypocalcemia (low calcium), leading to numbness, tingling, or muscle spasms
  • Hypercalcemia (high calcium), which can result in kidney stones, nausea, and confusion

Phosphorus imbalance:

  • Hyperphosphatemia( High phosphorus)  is an elevated level of phosphorus in the blood, often seen in chronic kidney disease. High phosphorus levels can lead to serious complications, including bone and joint pain, itching, and vascular calcification, which increases the risk of heart disease.

Acid-base disorders:
  • Metabolic acidosis, where the body accumulates too much acid, often due to kidney dysfunction
  • Metabolic alkalosis, where the body loses too much acid or gains too much base, affecting organ function
